The strategic 434 Km long Srinagar – Kargil – Leh National Highway (NH-1D) was thrown open to vehicular traffic 30 Apr 16 in a simple ceremony attended by a large gathering of people. The function was attended by senior officials of Indian Army the civil administration, Police & BRO.

Last year, the highway was opened to traffic on 13 May 2015. The road between Gagansir and Mechoi(KM 116) was covered with around 50 feet of snow due to massive avalanches and was closed on 29 Dec 15.

The herculean task of clearing the snow was taken on by the Border Roads Organisation of ‪#‎IndiaArmy‬ on 24th February 2016.

Snow cutters JCBs and Dozers were collectively deployed to clear the blockade which was followed by trials to assess suitability for movement of light and heavy vehicles before it was declared open yesterday.

This road serves as a lifeline the entire Ladakh Region and is essential to tourism and other economic activities in Kashmir.

The Army has assured the travellers of security along the road from the challenges posed by the harsh weather & terrain conditions as well as other threats.‪#‎J‬&K
