On Monday, 7th January 2019, The Narendra Modi government approved 10% reservation to economic weaker section in upper castes in government jobs and educational institutions.
The reservation targets economic weaker section in upper castes in government jobs and educational institutions.
Those earning below Rs 8 lakh will be able to avail the benefits, initial reports said. To enforce the decision, The government now needs to bring a constitutional amendment bill in the Parliament. The bill is likely to be tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday.
Reacting on the development, Congress MP and National Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi questioned the timing of the decision. Beneficiary of the move will be Financially poor people who do not belong to any social category (SC/ST/OBC).
This reservation will be extended to those belonging to the Brahman, Thakur, Kayastha, Baniya, Jaat, Gujjar and others communities. The provision of reservation falls under Article 15,16 of the constitution.
A person will be qualified as economically weaker if:
- Their annual income is below Rs 8 lakh,
- They own agricultural land of less than five hectres
- They own homes smaller than 1,000 sq. ft.
- They own residential plots below 109 yards in notified municipality
- They own residential plot below 209 yards in non notified municipality area
